Hawai`i Sailor 450 Miles from Finish of Circumnavigation

Honolulu, HI -- Twenty-year-old McKinley High graduate Brian "BJ"
Caldwell is days away from completing his historic voyage which began
here on June 1, 1995. On that day he sailed off aboard his bright red
26-foot Contessa sloop Mai Miti Vavau , seeking to establish a Guinness
Book record as the youngest person to sail around the world alone. 
Today, nearly 16 months later, he is within 450 nautical miles of his
goal.

BJ's circumnavigational course has taken him west from Hawaii: first to
Vanuatu, then to the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, on to Mauritius, then
Durban, Cape Town, St. Helena, Grenada, Panama, and back across the
Pacific to Hawaii.  He has experienced the wonder of sailing through
thousands of sea snakes, the terror of
being capsized in mountainous seas and the elation of rounding South
Africa's Cape of Good Hope.

BJ's present estimated time of arrival on Oahu is between this Friday
and Saturday, September 27 and 28.  Press boats will be provided to
media representatives wishing to view his arrival off Diamond Head and
are welcome at his aloha party at the Hawaii Yacht Club.
