The 100 x 4 m Relay World Record

WORLD RECORD HOLDERS: WINSTON HILLS LITTLE ATHLETICS CENTRE ATHLETES

2 minutes 11.2 seconds Winston Hills, Australia March 11th 2006

[Previous world record: Runners from Erfurt (Germany) 2:24.7 min, Erfurt, 8 April 1986]

As part of our end of season break-up day, it was agreed that a group of children from the Winston Hills Little Athletic Centre should attempt to break the World 100 x 4m metre relay. The rules required that each athlete receive the baton from a standing start. Our 100 athletes aged from 8 to 15 lined up around the track, each athlete spaced 4 metres apart. The teamwork and co-ordination was impressive indeed. The first boy passing the baton with his left hand to first girl who received in her right hand and then passed with her right hand to the left hand of the next boy and so on.

The weeks of planning almost paid off in our first attempt unfortunately the attempt was disqualified due to 2 runners not receiving the baton from a standing start. Our second attempt was exceptional!! The baton flew around the track at an impressive 3.04 metres per second each athlete carrying the baton for an average 1.312 seconds per leg.
