Hello, My name is Ralf Laue, I am a mathematician at the University of Leipzig, Germany and the founder of the Mental Calculation World Cup. I also act as a referee for mental calculation record attempts such as "Division of a 10-digit number by a 5-digit number". I would be grateful if you could take some time to read my comments about the rules that should be used for such record attempts. The base rules can be found at: http://www.recordholders.org/en/rules/calculating.html The objective is to divide ten-digit numbers by 5-digit numbers. The numbers have to be chosen at random, all divisions should be possible without a rest. Please find below the information on downloading programs that can be used for selecting the tasks and also for correcting the answers. Please generate the tasks by using one of these programs on your own computer. The attempt would not be valid if the programs or the computer would be provided by the record breaker. Please document the whole procedure as accurately as possible. If possible, I would prefer if you could do so in English language. Please add the signatures and the seal of your university / school or organisation to the document. Thank you for taking the time to help us with the validation of this attempt. I am sure that you will understand that correctness is extremely important for this kind of records. Thank you for supporting our sport of mental calculation. Best Wishes, Ralf Laue There are two ways for generating tasks: a) (You need to have a Java Runtime Enviroment installed) Download http://www.recordholders.org/downloads/division.class Start it by executing java division The program writes tasks and solutions to the console. Please separate the solutions (last column) from the tasks. Note: The source for the program can be found at: http://www.recordholders.org/downloads/division.java b) (You need to have MS Excel with the option "support macro execution" installed) Download http://www.recordholders.org/downloads/division.xls Open the file using MS Excel. Say "yes" when being asked whether you want to allow the execution of macros. Generate two files (one for the tasks and one for the solutions) by pressing CTRL + d
